When Is The Best Time To Change Your Career?

We work with people who are desperate to change their career because they are not feeling their current job is giving them what they need.

In our career coaching sessions, we always begin with “why do you want to change”?  The response is varied but they all have a common theme, and usually the answer is because they are not happy or feeling valued.   We are in awe of how much guts it takes to put your hand up and recognise that you no longer want to feel this way and you are ready to do something about it.  Change is one of the hardest and rewarding things you will do in life.

What happens next in our sessions, is what we find the most rewarding.  We ask our clients “if there were no limitations and money was not a key factor what is your ultimate career?”.

Usually a lot of silence then, most people answer with “I don’t know”

It stumps us every time and this is why we love what we do.  We are not taught to dream and think of life with effortless opportunity.  Granted we all need to earn a living.  But we love transforming people, helping them to open up and see what is possible and not take just what is available.

Career coaching is looking at your skills, experience and strengths, but it is also about tapping in and truly asking yourself what drives you, what motivates you, what makes you happy, what do you LOVE doing and best of all how can I get paid to do all of this.

The truth is that we live in a world when anything is possible.  Inspiration is all around us but you need to be committed to change.   It takes ridiculously hard work, persistence and constant action to make dreams come true.  But it is possible.

So when is is a good time to change your career?  The answer is to start before you are ready.

Here are our seven top tips to start you on your way to changing your life and your career:

1) Make a list of everything you have LOVED in your working life
2) Make a list of your strengths – what are you really good at?
3) Pretend you are going to sell your experience and strengths to a prospective organisation – what would you say?
4) Write a list of everything you love doing outside of work i.e your passions, your hobbies, where does your mind wander whilst you are at work?
5) Now use all of your information above and start to find commonalities and the best part DREAM of what you would love to do and get paid for
6) Research and find people or companies who have done what you are hoping to do.  There are great lessons to be learnt from success and those who have gone before you.  So make a list of those people who are doing what you want to do and work out how they did it
7) Commit to action and build your roadmap

What are you waiting for?  There are seven days in a week and someday isn’t one of them.
