Christmas is just around and corner and if your workplace is anything like ours, you too are pedalling at a phenomenal pace trying to get everything wrapped up by 5pm this Friday. The clock is counting down much quicker than you are crossing items off your to do list!

For our last blog for 2017 we thought we’d take some time to reflect on the year that was. What made us laugh and of course what made us shudder and shake our heads in disbelief. We are in the people business and when it comes to people, you always need to be ready to expect the unexpected.

We hope you get a giggle just as we did when we reflected on our year.

Position titles have come a long way in a short space of time. We seem to get more and more creative with our position titles to the point we don’t really know what the position is about. Here’s the top three creative position titles we have seen this year:

  • End of Life Manager – Any guesses what this position was really managing? Clue: It has nothing to do with human life!
  • Sandwich Artist – I’m no sandwich making expert but is there really that much of an art to making a sandwich at Subway?
  • Coffee Guru – What happened to good old Barista?

First impressions count and this year we had a few job seekers who made a memorable first impression for all the wrong reasons. Here’s our top 3 fashion tips on what not to wear to an interview – these fashion faux pas’ certainly didn’t help these job seekers win their way to a second interview:

  • Thongs – they are for the beach not an interview
  • Tracksuit pants – we want you to be as comfortable as possible at an interview but this is really pushing it, keep them for vegging out on the couch
  • Ugg boots – If they are not good enough for a Qantas lounge you definitely don’t want to be wearing your ugg boots to an interview

We recommend coming prepared to an interview but there are some things you should just leave at home:

  • Your pet dog: Granted it was an interview for a position with a vet practice and we understand this job seeker wanted to share how much they loved pets but……
  • Your coffee: In my opinion it’s just not professional to walk in to an interview with a coffee you’ve just purchased at the nearby café and sit drinking your coffee throughout the interview. Maybe I’m just old fashioned?
  • Chewing gum: It’s just down right distracting and unprofessional to sit in an interview chomping away on gum. Manners please people!

People are interesting and never cease to amaze and surprise; it’s really why we love what we do at Inspire HQ. So as your year wraps up we hope you too have time to sit back and reflect on the year that was; it can be quite calming to take those few minutes to reflect amongst the Christmas chaos!

From all the team at Inspire HQ we wish you a Merry Christmas and a safe, happy and successful 2018. Thank you for taking the time to read, comment and share our blogs and we’ll be back in 2018 with plenty of new ideas, advice and information on Recruitment, Human Resources and Careers.
