When Ballarat teenager Fiona Elsey lost her battle with cancer in 1991, her courage inspired a community to act. Inspired and motivated by Fiona’s determination, the community that had loved and supported her, created a cancer research facility in her hometown of Ballarat, in regional Victoria. The Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute (FECRI) is mostly dependent on the remarkable generosity of the Institute’s community of donors. It is because of their continued support that this most critical research into cancer continues.

A unique opportunity exists to join FECRI as their Community Engagement and Events Manager. Leading the Institute’s community engagement, fundraising, events and corporate partnerships, this is a role all about relationships and influence. In this part-time role, you will work closely with the team and Fundraising Committee to keep the Institute’s donor community engaged and its events running smoothly and sustainably.

Your work will help FECRI continue to make a world-class contribution to cancer research and maintain the trust of FECRI’s supporters to spend their funds wisely and efficiently.

What you’ll be doing

• Planning and delivering community engagement and fundraising activities that bring the FECRI story to life
• Building and nurturing meaningful relationships with event sponsors, corporate partners and suppliers
• Coordinating the community volunteer program and keeping volunteers engaged and connected to FECRI’s mission
• Maintaining donor and community databases with accuracy and care, while making regular visits to current sponsors and building new relationships across the community.
• Bringing the Community Engagement and Fundraising Strategy to life through marketing and promotional activities.
Making a difference in this role requires:
• Experience delivering community engagement and running fundraising events with a genuine passion for seeing that work translate into real support for a cause
• Strong stakeholder relationship building and influencing skills – you know how to earn a sponsor’s trust and turn a first conversation into a lasting partnership
• Excellent time management and attention to detail, so that even when you’re juggling multiple projects, nothing about the experience feels rushed or overlooked
• Strategic thinking paired with hands-on delivery – you’re just as comfortable shaping a campaign from the ground up as you are out there running it on the day

Why join FECRI?

If you are driven by a purpose to make a real difference and want to see your work make a genuine, world class contribution to cancer research, you will feel right at home at FECRI. This is a part-time opportunity, 2 to 3 days per week negotiable, with the flexibility to negotiate your hours of work. You will love working with the FECRI team, who are a small but close knit, highly committed team with a great culture. Hourly rate negotiable based on experience, plus enjoy the benefits of not-for-profit salary packaging.
