Four Years In: Lessons, Growth and Looking Ahead

Edith Thornton

On Tuesday, I marked my four-year anniversary with Inspire HQ. It’s hard to believe how quickly that time has passed. Along the way, there have been challenges and my fair share of ‘perceived failures’ some of which have also served as useful lessons for those around me on what not to do! But through those moments, there have also been many wins, growth opportunities, and valuable learnings. It hasn’t always been easy but is has certainly been worthwhile. I have made some great connections and friendships with people I never would have had the pleasure of meeting and working with.

Milestones like this naturally prompt reflection on how I got here, what I’ve achieved and what comes next. Taking the time to look back has made me realise just how much stability, confidence and fulfilment can be built over the years in your role. Especially when entering a new industry like I did 4 years ago, unlocking your potential takes time, time spent deepening your understanding of yourself, your work style, the ability to continue to refine your skills and learn new ones!

I have a few key takeaways from the past 4 years that I think can apply to many of us, regardless of where we are in our careers:

Embracing challenges and learnings

Success rarely comes without setbacks. I’ve made more mistakes than I can count (some bigger than others) and after working through that initial disappointment, I’ve learned the importance of accountability, honesty (with myself and others) and taking the time to reset and move forward.

Challenges are inevitable in any career, but they also present an opportunity to improve. Where can you refine your approach? What can you learn or do differently next time? Being open with my managers and colleagues and staying coachable and receptive to feedback through those moments, has helped me to step outside my comfort zone and take on new challenges.

Ask Questions

Note to self: Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Those around you don’t see curiosity as weakness, they see it as preparation and engagement. A well placed question can deepen understanding, spark ideas and lead to better discussions.

Personally, I like to understand the Why behind what I’m doing. Asking more and better quality questions has been a key driver of my growth. I’ve also found that responding to questions with thoughtful, inquisitive follow ups can strengthen relationships and help others to think more critically about their work too.

Embracing authenticity in the workplace

This has been one of my most important lessons. I’ve touched on it before, but it continues to resonate for me. We spend so much time at work, and over the years it has been easier to show up as myself. I’ve grown more confident in sharing my thoughts and opinions, setting boundaries (with room to improve) and leaning into the parts of my personality and working style that help me thrive in my position.

I remember being at school and being told over and over again that I asked lots of questions, and talked too much, turns out that’s a great springboard for a career in recruitment! As I move into the next phase of my career, I feel genuinely excited about what’s ahead, who I’ll meet, the conversations I’ll have and what I’ve achieved when sitting here looking back in another 12 months time.
