Time Management Tips to Manage the Holiday Hustle!

Edith Thornton

As the festive season approaches, life seems to pick up speed. Between end of year deadlines, Christmas Shopping, school concerts and a flood of “Let’s catch up!” messages, time can feel like it is slipping through our fingers. Workplaces buzz with last-minute projects and personal to-do lists grow longer by the day. Everyone I talk to, when I ask how they’re going, the first thing they say is “Busy!”

During this whirlwind period, effective time management becomes your best ally. It’s not just about staying productive – it’s about carving out space to enjoy the season without letting stress overshadow the joy. Here’s how I manage my time to stay balanced and present during the holiday rush!

Start with Clarity

Time management starts with understanding your priorities. For me, the Christmas period is a juggling act between professional deadlines and personal commitments (cue the school concerts I mentioned earlier!) Taking a moment to identify what’s truly important helps me create actionable plans that keeps the chaos in check.

At work, I focus on tasks with year end deadlines, or those that directly impact others. At home, I prioritise the non negotiables – cherished family time, self care (running or reading) and traditions that make the season special. When you know what matters most, it’s easier to allocate your time intentionally, ensuring the season feels meaningful rather than overwhelming.

Plan your day like a pro

With so much going on, planning becomes essential! Start by mapping out key dates and working backwards to schedule your tasks. I rely heavily on my calendar, blocking time for important projects, but also for admin and prep time.

One thing I’ve learned about myself – and even mentioned in a previous blog – is that when life gets busy, my self care can be the first to slip. To counter this, I make a conscious effort to block out my personal calendar treating it like an appointment. This ensures that I prioritise those stress relieving habits and keep them on track.
Another tool I’ve embraced over the last 6 months is the “Two Minute Rule.” If a task will take less time to complete than it does to add it to your to-do list, do it right away! Knocking out quick tasks clears mental clutter and keeps your productivity flowing.

Delegate and share the load

If you’re like me – a self confessed control freak – this one can be tough! But during busy times, delegation is essential.

At work, lean on your team where you can. Delegate tasks to colleagues with the capacity to help and talk to your manager about what’s critical to finish now versus what can wait until January.

At home, involve family and friends in tasks like decorating or meal prep. Sharing the load not only lightens your burden but creates opportunities to connect which is what this time of year is about for lots of us.

Focus Over Multitasking

The hustle of the holidays often temps us to multitask, but splitting your attention can lead to mistakes and frustration. Instead, fully engage with one task at a time. Whether you’re preparing a presentation or wrapping gifts, giving your full focus ensures you’ll finish faster and with better results.

Time management isn’t just about ticking off tasks -it’s about creating space for what truly matters. By setting clear priorities, planning effectively and staying flexible, you can approach the holiday season with less stress and more joy.

Remember, the holidays aren’t about perfection – they’re about connection, celebration, and finding moments of peace amidst the hustle. So, lean into the magic of the season, and make time for what is special for you.
