Vulnerability Bomb Incoming

Liz Williams

In our work, either through delivering Effective Teams training, exploring self-awareness through DiSC Workshops, or conducting culture and organisational reviews across many sectors—both large and small—one theme consistently rises to the surface: we all have far more going on below the surface than others might imagine, or even than we might be aware of ourselves.

We spend a lot of time helping teams understand themselves better, understand their colleagues, and reflect on how they navigate uncertainty, change, and connection—both building and rebuilding it. What emerges—over and over—is that trust isn’t built through predictability alone. Yes, predictability matters. Years of working together, knowing each other’s rhythms, and having a reliable track record all form part of the foundation.

But the trust that truly shifts a team…
The trust that deepens culture…
The trust that transforms workplaces…

…comes from vulnerability.

There is sometimes a moment in our sessions where we intentionally ask people to share something real. Something human. Something honest. Every time, it lands like a quiet vulnerability bomb—one of those moments where the room softens, people breathe a little deeper, and colleagues see each other differently.

This moment is a gift and an honour to be a part of.

It’s a stark reminder that behind every job title sits a personal story full of challenges, strengths, setbacks, growth, and resilience. None of us are immune to difficulty. And for many of us, our backstory—our grit, our character, our opportunities—has been shaped by the very challenges we’ve endured.

For some people, vulnerability comes easily. It feels natural to open up, to share, to speak to the emotional landscape behind their work. For others, vulnerability feels like navigating a mountain with cliff faces on every route. It takes courage. It takes trust. And it takes time.

What we know is this:
the greatest growth comes from leaning into the moments that make us uncomfortable.

Each time someone shares—even a little—the team changes. Trust stretches. Understanding deepens. People see not just the role, but the human behind it.

It is an honour and a privilege to be in these moments. To witness people trusting each other enough to show up honestly. To see teams connect in ways that genuinely shift how they work together.

And as we head into the festive season—a time that feels different for everyone—this matters even more.
For some, this period brings joy, rest, and celebration. For others, it brings pressure, grief, stress, or loneliness. We cannot assume what this time of year means for someone.

Which brings us to the key takeaway for leaders and businesses:

Encouraging open communication allows us to work with staff to support the best outcomes for both employees and employers — and that starts with leaders modelling vulnerability.

When leaders share appropriately, honestly, and with intention, they create permission for others to do the same. They signal that it’s safe to speak up, to ask for help, to express concern, or to share context that may impact performance or wellbeing.

Vulnerability from leaders is not weakness.
It’s not oversharing.
And it’s not loss of authority.

It’s leadership.

A simple check-in.
A moment of personal insight.
A willingness to say, “This is challenging for me too.”

These small acts create workplaces where people feel seen, supported, and able to perform at their best.

As we close out the year, let’s lean into connection.
Let’s make space for honest conversations.
And let’s remember that vulnerability—starting with leadership—can be the spark that strengthens a team.
